Daily Inspection Importance

Front of Truck

Check for visible fluid leaks under the vehicle
Inspect headlights, turn signals, and marker lights
Verify windshield is clean and free of major cracks
Check front bumper and grille for damage
Ensure license plate is secure and visible
Verify Detroit Assurance radar cover is clean (if equipped)
Check hood latches are secure

Driver Side

Inspect driver mirror for cleanliness and adjustment
Check driver door for proper operation
Inspect fuel tank caps and verify they're secure
Check steps and grab handles for security
Inspect tires for obvious damage or low pressure
Verify wheels have no visible cracks or missing lug nuts
Check DEF tank cap is secure (if equipped)

Passenger Side

Inspect passenger mirror for cleanliness and adjustment

Ensure driver's license/CDL is valid
Check medical card is current
Verify ELD is operational (if required)
Check that permit book is present (if needed)

Pre-Start Checks

Verify parking brake is applied
Place transmission in neutral

Pre-Departure Final Checks

Brake System Verification

Verify air pressure is in normal operating range (100-120 PSI)
Apply service brake and hold for 1 minute (pressure should not drop more than 3 PSI)
Test parking brake hold by gently trying to move with brake applied
Release parking brake and test service brake stopping ability
Check trailer brake function (if applicable)
Verify brake pedal is firm, not soft or spongy
Ensure no air leak sounds are audible

Steering & Suspension Check

Check for excessive play in steering wheel
Turn steering wheel fully left and right to verify smooth operation
Listen for unusual noises during steering
Check that truck sits level (not leaning)
Verify air suspension height is correct (if equipped)
Check for unusual bounce or sway
Ensure steering wheel returns to center position

Fifth Wheel & Coupling

Verify fifth wheel is properly engaged to trailer (if applicable)
Check that trailer kingpin is locked in fifth wheel jaws
Ensure safety latch is properly engaged
Test connection by gently pulling forward with trailer brakes applied
Verify air lines and electrical connections are secure
Check that trailer landing gear is fully raised
Ensure trailer is sitting level when coupled

Final Walk-Around

Verify all compartment doors and latches are closed
Check that hood is fully closed and latched
Ensure all lights are functioning in all modes
Verify no new leaks have appeared under the truck
Check that all cargo is properly secured
Verify all required placards are displayed (if applicable)
Ensure no obstacles are around the vehicle before departure
