A roadside breakdown costs more than the repair itself. The bill adds a tow, emergency labor, days out of service, a late or lost load and driver time, while the same job in your shop costs a repair order and a few hours. This page lays out the cost lines side by side, shows the published figures and where they disagree, and gives a checklist for pricing your own breakdowns. Schedule a call to track breakdowns and repair cost per vehicle.

Roadside Breakdown vs Planned Shop Repair: Every Cost Line Side by Side
The same failed part costs more on the roadside because tow, premiums, downtime and load risk pile on top
FleetRabbit and OxMaint, both vendors, break a breakdown into the same components. The table follows their comparison.
| Cost line | Planned shop repair | Roadside breakdown |
|---|
| Labor | Standard shop rate | After-hours or roadside premium |
| Parts | Ordered ahead at normal cost | Rush-shipped at a premium |
| Towing | None | Heavy-duty tow, recovery and storage |
| Downtime | Hours inside a planned window | Days, with the load reassigned or late |
| Driver | Shift not disrupted | Waiting time, lodging, travel home |
| Compliance | Inspected before dispatch | Possible out-of-service order |
TOWING AND RECOVERY
Heavy-duty tow, recovery and storage, with no standard price
EMERGENCY LABOR AND PARTS
Call-out, after-hours labor and rush parts
DOWNTIME
Days out of service times a daily cost
LOAD AND CUSTOMER
Late charges, redelivery, lost loads, cargo risk
DRIVER
Paid waiting time, lodging and travel
COMPLIANCE

Towing and Recovery Cost for a Heavy-Duty Truck: Published Figures Disagree by a Wide Margin
Geotab cites $2,500 to $5,000 or more per event while OxMaint says $500 to $2,000, with distance and location driving both
TOWING COST PER EVENT, AS PUBLISHED. THE TWO RANGES BARELY OVERLAP

Pick neither as your own cost. Geotab attributes its range to LogRock, a roadside assistance provider, and says rollovers cost more. OxMaint gives no source. FleetRabbit says it found no published average for towing. Pull your last twelve months of tow invoices instead.
Mobile Repair vs In-Shop Labor Rates: What the Roadside Call-Out Premium Looks Like
Fullbay's survey puts the median mobile repair rate at $160 an hour against $145 in the shop
Fleet Equipment reports Fullbay survey medians of $160 for mobile repair and $145 for in-shop work. That is about a 10 percent gap on labor alone, from our arithmetic. Roadside breakdown labor can cost more than a planned mobile visit because of after-hours rates, and the articles do not give a figure for that.

What One Roadside Breakdown Can Add Up To: A Worked Reefer Example with Every Line Shown
FleetRabbit's unsourced example reaches about $3,220 once service call, downtime, late delivery and driver time are counted
The example comes from a FleetRabbit article that labels no source for it. It assumes $600 a day of downtime, inside a published range of $448 to $760 a day that FleetRabbit credits to industry estimates cited by FMCSA. Geotab, citing ATRI, uses $90.89 an hour for an operating truck, so three idle hours is over $270. OxMaint puts typical downtime at 2.3 to 2.4 days per event, also unsourced.

Claims About Roadside Cost Multipliers That Do Not Hold Up to a Source Check
Three to nine times, two to three times and 78 percent preventable are all repeated without a traceable study
Geotab says unscheduled maintenance costs three to nine times more than planned work and credits OxMaint. OxMaint's own breakdown page says emergency labor and parts are often two to three times a scheduled job, with no source, and says about 78 percent of breakdowns are preventable, again unsourced. We could not trace any of these to an independent study, so we treat them as vendor estimates. The Geotab page also notes that Noregon reports 57 percent of trucks returned to service still had fault codes, a figure it cites to Truckinginfo that we did not verify.
